A map for conservation strategies: Proposal for the endangered blond capuchin monkeys in the humid and dry forests of Alagoas - Brazil

Resumo

The great biodiversity of neotropical primates is not mirrored in the northeast of Brazil where the degradation by colonization started. So a national action plan was developed to work in the conservation of the threatened species of monkeys, one of them is the Sapajus flavius which can be found in the state of Alagoas at contrasting biomes, Atlantic Forest and Caatinga. The goal of the study was to create a map of the situation of the conservation from samples sites of Alagoas state and propose conservation-oriented actions for two scenarios: 1- where government/community agrees in invest and participates in conservation actions; 2- where we know that no effort will be made. We used data from previous studies to obtain indexes of benefits and risk for suitability and classified the sites into three types: A- where the risk in the sites is controlled by a protection system and they are suitable for monkeys; B- where they are still good to use by monkeys but the extinction risk is strong; C- where they are not used, nor suitable and the defaunation is strong. We recommend continuing prioritizing monitoring and protection actions in both sites A since they are the last good refuges of this species. Only in scenario 1, it is possible to finance an active force task to improve the forest and decrease the risk to the fauna in fragments type B and C. In this scenario, we can consider the reintroduction of the monkeys that have flexible behaviours to survive in this changing ecosystem while fulfilling the ecological service of seed disperser for these defaunated patches. However, there is not much we can do in scenario 2 about the ecological situation from B and C sites unless the minimal: try to gain awareness through educational events in order to change their perspectives.
