TRENDS AND PATTERNS OF PUBLICATIONS OF PRIORITY AREAS FOR MAMMAL CONSERVATION

A primary goal of conservation biologists is to identify critical areas for the conservation of biological diversity and then strategically include them in an efficient system of reserves. Besides, reserve networks have been selected for different objectives, and there is a gap between research and implementation in conservation planning. This study evaluated the trends and patterns among publications of priority areas for the conservation of mammals and if there are recommendations of the literature for implementation of conservation actions. We selected papers that explicitly approached issues related to spatial conservation planning, including conceptual and methodological framework to propose priorities areas to conservation and we drove scientometric study selecting only the studies that used at least one species of mammal. Overall, 22.5% (n = 32) of evaluated papers had the intention of implementing some action of conservation or translated to a specific implementation, and 2.8% (n = 4) developed the study to evaluate laws. Almost 75% (n = 106) of conservation assessments were concerned about achieving specific outcomes, such as evaluate existing protected areas or improve prioritization techniques, but a tiny amount of papers directed measures to implementation of conservation or estimated monetary costs for conservation actions. In general, the methods are highly effective at identifying where crucial areas for protection, but of limited use for deciding how should be the implementation of conservation action. Although most papers did not direct measures to implementation of conservation action, evaluate and contribute to “more effective protected area networks” and prioritizations that “incorporate biodiversity into a government process”, can be more practical and designated as political tools. We recommend collaboration between academy and implementing organizations of conservation actions.
