DETERMINANTS IN THE SPATIOTEMPORAL VARIATION OF HOME RANGE SIZE OF CALLITHRIX AURITA IN THE BRAZILIAN ATLANTIC FOREST

Resumo

Home range is defined as the area where animals carry out their daily activities to attend their needs. Within-species, the home range size may vary due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors, such as animal size, group size and diet. However, the factors that influence this variation for the Callithrix genus are still poorly understood. In this research, we followed a habituated group of Callithrix aurita (Buffy-tufted-ear Marmoset) from January to October 2017, for five complete days a month, marking its GPS position every 15 min in the Serra do Japi Municipal Biological Reserve (2071 ha, 23º11’S, 46º52’W), in Jundiai, São Paulo. We estimated monthly home ranges (MHR) and core areas (MCA) with the fixed kernel density estimator at 95%, and 50%, respectively, and investigated the influence of average monthly temperature, monthly cumulative precipitation and fruit availability using multiple linear regression models. The study group used an annual home range of 54.6 ha and an annual core area of 25.1 ha (with a monthly variation from 16.8 ha MHR and 6.1 ha MCA in September during the dry season, to 49.5 ha MHR and 22.2 ha MCA in February during the wet season). MHR and MCA were positively influenced with temperature (MHR β=1.88, P=0.04; MCA β=0.67, P=0.02) and precipitation (MHR β=0.08, P=0.01; MCA β=0.03, P=0.001). However, the availability of fruits negatively influenced the size of the areas (MHR β=-2.91, P=0.02; MCA β=-0.86, P=0.02). Our results demonstrates that ecological and environmental factors affect the movement behavior (represented by the home range size) of our study species on two spatial scales, and on a monthly time scale, highlighting the importance of fruit availability, environmental temperature and precipitation in the establishment of their home range.
