Opening Plenary: The biodiversity of plant-frugivore interactions: types, functions, and consequences of their extinctionsPEDRO JORDANO SpeakerPairwise plant-animal mutualistic interactions build up into mega-diverse networks involving dozens of interacting species, being the most generalized among free-living species. These mutualisms consist of food provisioning by plants and, their counterpart, plant propagule (seeds) movement by the animals, being crucial for the natural vegetation regeneration in many ecosystems, yet we are far from understanding which part of this enormous interaction biodiversity is needed for their maintenance. |

Plenary: Frugivore reintroduction as a tool to restore seed dispersal in a defaunated worldALEXANDRA PIRES RIO DE JANEIRO / RJ SpeakerIn most tropical forest vertebrates have been successively extirpated by anthropogenic impacts. The loss of these animals, most of which act as seed dispersers, has severe consequences to plant recruitment, especially for large-seeded species. In such empty forests, the natural recolonization by the fauna is generally inhibited due to the isolation of forest remnants or by the absence of source areas. In such scenarios, the reintroduction of locally extinct frugivores can be the only alternative. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, a trophic rewilding experiment - carried out in one of the largest urban forests in the world - has had promising results, serving as an example to a more active conservation strategy to recovering ecological processes mediated by plant-animal interactions. |

Plenary: Intraspecific variation in seed traits and its effects on seed dispersal by scatter-hoarding rodentsBO WANG SpeakerSeed traits play an important role on seed dispersal by animals, and seed dispersers in turn drive evolutionary changes in seed traits. Previous studies have primarily focused on the mean values of these traits, there is also significant intraspecific variation in them. Therefore, it is pertinent to incorporate intraspecific variation in seed traits in seed-disperser interaction studies. |

Plenary: Seed dispersal by frugivores through the matrix of fragmented landscapesJUAN PEDRO GONZALEZ-VARO SpeakerMost of the Earth’s ice-free terrestrial land is covered by anthropogenic habitats. Forests typically persist as patches embedded in a matrix of agricultural fields, rangelands, industrial areas, and urban settlements. Since most woody plants are dispersed by frugivorous animals, frugivores play a central role in the dynamics of forest plant communities in fragmented landscapes. Frugivore movements through the matrix are needed for both plant connectivity among forest patches and plant colonization of deforested areas. But, how much do frugivore communities change from forest to open anthropogenic habitats? Are changes mainly driven by the loss or by the replacement of frugivore species in the matrix? Do changes affect traits that are less advantageous in open habitats? Do changes in frugivore communities ultimately influence the composition and traits of the plants dispersed through the matrix? |

Plenary: Stomatochory is important too! Why we should investigate this major form of non-endozoochoric seed dispersalKIM MCCONKEY SpeakerMany stomatochoric dispersers are dominant members of frugivore communities and can be effective dispersers of seeds. A more robust understanding of community-wide patterns of seed dispersal can be gained if stomatochoric dispersers are considered as integrated and important members of the frugivore community. |

Plenary: Frugivory and Seed Dispersal in Madagascar’s rainforest ecosystemsONJA RAZAFINDRATSIMA SpeakerAnimal frugivores can influence plant population growth, structure patterns of plant coexistence, and enable plant establishment in novel environments through seed dispersal. Unfortunately, anthropogenic activities, coupled with natural disturbances, can disrupt these interactions. Thus, characterizing the patterns and outcomes of these interactions in the face of increasing environmental changes can clarify species resilience and, ultimately, the cascading impacts on forest integrity. With a focus on frugivorous lemurs and their food plants in Madagascar’s biodiverse rainforests, where a majority of the highly diverse plant communities have traits adapted for seed dispersal by frugivores, this talk will provide an overview of the current state of knowledge on plant-lemur mutualistic interactions and the roles and impacts of lemur frugivores on plant population dynamics and community structure. |

Plenary: Seed dispersal and its consequences for the seedscapeNOELLE BECKMAN SpeakerSeed dispersal underlies important plant ecological and evolutionary processes, including gene flow, population dynamics, and diversity. While seed dispersal is a complex and context-dependent process, I emphasize that we can further our understanding of seed dispersal’s contribution to plant population dynamics and ecosystem functions using multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives. I use interdisciplinary approaches, spanning from mathematics to metabolomics, to study the causes and consequences of seed dispersal . I will provide an overview of emergent unifying frameworks currently used to study dispersal and how their integration can provide a more mechanistic understanding of seed dispersal. I discuss examples from on-going work, for example, investigating the interplay between fruits and their interacting partners for plant chemical diversity and population-level consequences of seed dispersal for plants varying in a range of traits. With a mechanistic understanding of seed dispersal, we will better understand the evolutionary ecology of seed dispersal, the influence of global change on seed dispersal processes, and potential cascading effects to ecosystems. |

Closing plenary: Rainforest ecological health state: How to take its "temperature" from the ground to the canopy?PIERRE-MICHEL FORGET SpeakerEcological interactions are being affected at unprecedented rates by human activities in tropical forests. Yet, the continuity of ecological functions such as seed dispersal is crucial for forest regeneration. It thus becomes increasingly urgent to be able to rapidly assess the health status of these processes in order to take appropriate management measures. Following the study of Natural History, especially seed dispersal and seedling recruitment, of key timber species in 1984-2003, I have then dedicated the next two decades (2004-2023) to evaluate the effects of human activities (fragmentation, hunting, logging) on tree dynamics and rainforest health status in the Guianas. I have therefore developed methods to rapidly assess the level of seed removal and predation, and the activity of both seed-eaters and frugivores in the understory and in the canopy of a few charismatic timber species dispersed by either rodents or arboreal mammals and birds in Meso and Southern-American forests. During the presentation, I will review what we have learned from the consequences of hunting and forest fragmentation and logging for dispersal and seed fate of medium- and large-sized tree seed species. |
